February Julep Maven Box!

Happy Thursday Ladies! Can you believe it's the last day of January?!

Last night I received my February Julep Maven box. It was packed with goodies and a little Valentines treat :)  This month, I switched to 'Classic with a Twist.' It came with...

'Helen' - a smoky pastel lavender creme
'Claudette' - a smoky brick red creme
Oxygen Nail Treatment
Freedom Polymer Top Coat
Compact Eyelash Curler
2 Chocolate Hearts <3

The polishes came with "swatch me" stickers already stuck on top, which is neat, but I don't quite know how I'm going to swatch it seeing as how the brush is attached to the same piece.  I haven't had a chance to swatch the colors on myself yet - a definite post for tomorrow - and I like the colors, but in hindsight I think I probably would have chosen another set of colors. I'm also excited to try the nail treatment because *sigh* my nails are just a tad brittle. And I will need to find the strength to set down my no-fail Poshe Fast Dry Top Coat to test out the polymer top coat ;)  What do you think of your Maven Box?

P.S. If you like what you see and aren't a Maven yet, Julep is offering an AMAZING deal on their introductory boxes!  For one penny - yes, one of those dinged up copper coins you see lying around the street here and there - you can get your own set of  top quality polishes and other Julep goodies! Simply use promo code COLOR2012. Click here to see what its all about :)

Italian Sausage & Rotini!

Wednesday is here and that means my best buddy Friday is not too far away!

Last night I almost completely burned off the tip of my index finger while making taquitos....ok, not literally but it hurt just the same! So it's a good thing our favorite dinner dish is practically fool proof ;)

We make a MEAN Italian (Turkey) Sausage & Rotini dinner that is 1) finger licking good - and that is a scientific fact, 2)  friendly on the waist, and 3) super easy and quick to make.  There you go, three reasons to give this a try at home :)

Ingredients:

1   Package of Turkey Sweet Italian Sausage (5) (brands: Honeysuckle White, Jennie-O, Foster Farms)
1   Box of Ronzoni Healthy Harvest Rotini
1   Jar of Rinaldi Marinara Sauce in 'Tomato, Garlic & Onion' flavor
1   Cup of Baby Bella Mushrooms

Optional/Extras:
Parmesan Cheese
Dinner Roll

Cook the turkey sausages over medium heat in a non-stick pan and set the pasta to boil.  Turn the sausages over on each side every four minutes or so. While these are cooking, slice down the mushrooms into your preferred thickness. When the pasta and sausages are a few minutes away from being done, I like to cook the mushrooms in a bit of Olive Oil and heat up the marinara sauce.  When it's all done, plate it to your liking and enjoy, and then have the husband/boyfriend/lover wash the dishes ;)

No-Fat Guide To: Coats

January is almost over, but we are still in the thick of winter! And seeing how it has been freezing in some parts of the nation, today I'm sharing a chapter on Coats from Charla Krupp's "How To Never Look Fat Again" (featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine, Oprah and Time Magazine just to name a few).  I picked up this book at a BORDERS liquidation sale a few years ago and haven't shopped the same since! Hope you pick up some helpful tips.

Man-tailored topcoat

With a classic V-neck notch collar, this single- or double-breasted topper is cut like an expensive overcoat for men. The V-beck lapels and narrow tailored shape provide a lean look that lengthens your neck and streamlines the area from muffin top to tummy.

Ladylike Coat

c/o Asos

Fitter on the top to the waist, it then flares to the hem.  Often, there are slimming vertical princess seams from bust to hem, and trendier versions have sleeves that bell of puff out to the wrist.  This style is terrific for bigger bottoms, hips, thighs and rear and fat arms and tummy.

Sculpted Coat

c/o Asos

This one features dramatic contours - either a wide dolman shape or a curved cocoon shape.  Some have deep armholes or raglan sleeves. Because it combines sharp architectural lines and volume, there is plenty of room for big boobs, rear, hips, thighs and middle issues.

Retro Coat

c/o OASAP

It looks vintage, but new fabrics and detailing put it in a contemporary context. It can be straight or A-lined, but it features looser cropped three-quarter sleeves, fancy collars, and decorative buttons.  This coat skims past the middle and all the attention on top is a great diversion for women with heavy thighs and legs.  Just choose styles with buttons in matching tones if you are bosomy and shawl collars or notched lapels if you have a short neck.

Peacoat

This nautical-inspired style is a classic. That's good news. It comes in several coat lengths, from mid-thigh to knee grazing. Its body skimming tailored shape is flattering. If you're really busty, however, a peacoat is not your best bet because your breasts will be smushed into one weird uni-boob. It's better for those who want to bulk up their tops to balance out wider bottom halves.

Empire Coat

c/o Macy's

Mod inspired with raised waist, this coat totally hides a flabby midsection with a fashion-y look. Stick to solids and don't get sidetracked by fattening extras - such as plaid - that cancel the slimming effect.

Swing Coat

Also called a trapeze style, this one starts out fitted at the shoulder then cuts loose to a triangle shape.  Lots of middle-management opportunities here - as it's flattering on those with muffin top, Buddha belly, and a generous read, plus, it shows off great legs.

Cape Coat

Belted in front, deep and loose at the arm holes, this style offers camouflage for back fat, arms, and big boobs and is super for larger sizes.

I Love Fridays #3 & My New Favorite Obsession!

Happy Friday Ladies!

January is like a Monday - the sooner it's over with the better and this is the last Friday of the month...Woohoo! So aside from Friday, here a few other things I love:

       1.  Poshe Super Fast Drying Top Coat: Where have you been all my life?!  Sheila at Pointless Cafe always has the most amazing manicure with a high gloss shine.  Her not-so-secret secret is this amazing top coat. Ok I know I need to stop using "amazing" so much but it really does apply here!  I purchased a bottle online and got it last night just in time for The Nail Files (see below).  Poshe met my expectations and more. It really does deliver it's "dry to the touch in 1 minute" promise. And the shine is great!

    2.  Link Ups! Link ups are great because its a fun way to connect with other bloggers and open your blog to wider audiences.  Today's Link Up is....(drum roll please)...

The Nail Files Link Up

Today I'm wearing Sinful Colors "Sugar Sugar," a cherry red shimmer with a hint of gold flecks. I used two coats to reach full opacity. The formula was great and I love this color!

Enjoy the pics below and join me in taking a look at what other fabulous colors are being shared today :)

Charming and Thrifty

I PROMISE I'll stop talking about Charming Charlie so much...next year ;)

They are having a BOGO clearance sale & of course I took advantage! I loved my gold and cream bangle watch so much I picked up another in red for only $7.  And I was able to take home a 2-tone red and fuschia leaf bangle for free! I don't know what has gotten into me. I used to consciously (and unconsciously) stay away from red but I can't get enough of it right now. I guess it's because I like to wear black and white so much that I need a pop of classic color!

My Love and I loved to thrift shop in LA and it's something we do together here too.  Scoring great deals is my high!  I don't shop for clothes as much as I do for picture frames and knick-knacks.  I never really looked at the clothing but I've been following the lovely Tori @ My Thrifty Chic and she always manages to find the best deals!  So I dug a little deeper at the local Goodwill this past weekend and found a mint condition camel colored coat at a great price. I'm revamping it and I'll post about that soon.  I also picked up the belt pictured below (my third belt EVER) for $3.

I rummaged through an estate sale this past weekend and found a simple but lovely black pendant necklace picture below. It's marked "Sarah Cov," and through some Google research I learned that this is a vintage necklace produced by Sarah Conventry. A vintage gold and black pendant necklace at $2.25...yeah, I'd say that's pretty good.

 P.s.
I've kinda slowed down with my blogging and started to go into my 2-minute attention span mode but I made a resolute promise to grow through my blog so here's a *CHEERS* to more consecutive posting!

Smooth and Perfect?

Last week I picked up a bottle of Sally Hansen's Smooth and Perfect Color Care in "Sea" on an awesome deal.  This line only offers sheer pastels in pinks, peaches, a light blue and this minty color "Sea."

If I had a five star scale, this would be half a star.  It was ridiculously sheer...even with an undercolor. It took too many coats to get this opacity so it took FOREVER to dry! And then the tips wrinkled up like Rachel Zoe's lips! You can see that in these pics. Sorry ladies, I love to share great polishes but I had to save you from this nightmare.  Worst polish ever.  And then to top it off, someone asked me if these were press-on nails! Houston, we have a problem!

By the way, did you get a glimpse of Jupiter next to the moon last night? It was gorgeous and bright.  The next time we'll see it so close to the moon is 2026!

I Love Fridays #2

I can't believe it's been a week since I last posted. Shame on me! Anyway...

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!
It is that great time of the week again...time to clock out, have a dinner date and sip on a Margarita - blended with no salt please ;)   If you are a stay at home wife/mom, it's time to hand the baby over to hubby and then sip on a Margarita ;) lol.  So I think I'm going to make it a habit to share at three things I love every Friday.  And this week's contestants are:

       1. My Jessica Simpson Leopard Print Tote:  I picked up this beauty about 2 years ago at TJ Maxx as a Christmas present to myself. Yes, I like leopard print but moreso I love the colors, size, shape and texture of the leather. It was love at first sight and it's been sitting up in my closet for several months because I really don't want to wear it out...and trust me, it takes a lot of restraint!  Do you have that item in your closet that you're trying to preserve?

       2.   My Cognac boots: I picked these up at JC Penney on a great Black Friday sale ($30!) again about 2 years ago. They are my go-to because they are super comfortable and dress up any casual outfit that much more. They have an inch and a half wedge heel which is great because lets face it, I'm short, and short and flat don't exactly mix, and I'd like boots I can walk in for hours at a time. These babies bump me up to a solid 5'3" LOL. I'm just a little sad that they are developing a crease. I stuff them when not in use so that the crease don't settle in deeply.

       3.   My Revlon Brow Fantasy Defining Brow Pencil: what a mouthful! Anywho, my eyebrows are on the light and sparse side and I need to fill them in to frame my face. This pencil is my saving grace. The color is spot on (some dark browns have a reddish tint to them), it doesn't look heavy and unnatural, and it includes a brow gel to set the hair into place. Say NO to rogue hairs!  You can find them at pretty much every retailer and they go for $6 - $7.  I seriously don't know what I would do without this.  Sometimes I have nightmares about what would happen if it was ever discontinued...just kidding! But SERIOUSLY, I love this.

I Love Fridays!

Nothing can put a smile on my face early in the morning like the realization that its FRIDAY!
TGIF, I'm ready for the weekend!

And since I'm on the subject, here are a few other things I love:

       1.  Gold Jewelry/Accessories: "There's just something about it." Last night I received the gold chain link bracelet I purchased from ebay not too long ago because I need to build up my collection of gold arm candy so that I can layer a few pieces together, and by a few, I don't mean 10 LOL. Sometimes less is more ;) Anywho, I also love receiving packages in the mail. Yes, you don't get that instant satisfaction of purchasing items in person, but who doesn't love unwrapping goodies?!

       2. Charming Charlie: I picked up this gold and cream bangle watch at a super awesome deal of $7 a few days ago. Its pretty hard not to spend every cent in my wallet when I'm here. Just look at the pictures below....I know, right? Here's a tissue to wipe off that drool ;)  I SERIOUSLY wish this was my closet.

       3. Nail Polish: As if you hadn't noticed ;)  Last week I received my Monthly Julep Maven Box, and today I have "Toni" to show you.  It's a very pretty ashy plum color with a good formula. I have two coats on with a top coat for added gloss. Working in a law firm I have to be conscious of my color selection, because lets be honest, no one takes neon colors seriously! This color is fun, feminine and office friendly.

Don't forget that you can still get your introductory Julep Maven Box for 1 CENT by using promo code COLOR2012 at checkout. What kind of Maven are you?

Have a great Friday & weekend Y'all!

January Link Up: Stripes!

The lovely Marion at MarionBerry Style hosted a link up for January's trend of the month - Stripes.

I did not own one single piece of striped clothing, or accessory for that matter, prior to last night.  Mother always steered me clear of stripes for 2 very big reasons as you can see ;)  In the spirit of change and stepping outside of my comfort zone, I decided to participate in this link up.  So off I went shopping for a striped scarf, bracelet, clutch, etc., because I certainly wasn't going to WEAR stripes, haha oh dear no. Well, turns out I fell in love with a black and white striped peplum top from Kohls! I'm still kinda up in the air about it...but it was fun nonetheless!  And go figure, I left my connection cord at home! Hence the late post/link up.

Check out the other participants and stylishly striped ladies here.

P.s. excuse the frizzy hair...gotta love rain and humidity!
